But I Love Him
But I Love Him by Amanda Grace is a painful and heartbreaking story to read. It's about a young adult, Ann, who is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend (Connor). A passage that breaks my heart is, "No one can protect me now. I pushed them all away. I lost everything. I gave it to him. And he gave me this" (Grace 2). In this scene, she's lying on the floor in pain - physically and mentally. It makes me so mad how people claim to love someone, yet hurt them in ways that are unforgettable. What makes me even more mad is that some people chose to stay with the person who hurts them continuously. Another part of me gets it though. I mean, if you really love someone, you don't want to leave them. Therefore, you keep on believing their lies like "I'm sorry" and "I won't do it again". But it's not healthy or worth it to stay with someone like that.
My rating of this book would probably be a 3 out of 5 stars. Each chapter is in Ann's perspective about what's going on in that moment with Connor, and it's very sad and interesting to read - but it isn't like a real story. Sure, there's a setting and conflict, but no climax or solution. It's almost as if you're reading a diary. I wouldn't really recommend this book as something to read.
